Our ministry believes in the use of banners and crosses for the purpose of drawing a crowd and initiating conversation with those who would otherwise simply pass by.
We believe that a banner should be primarily scripture and have both the law and the gospel if possible. Banners will automatically start debate; there is no need for a banner to be offensive, because the Word of God is already offensive to those who are perishing. You do not want the banner to take away from the message of the Gospel by stirring debate on other subjects (like evolution, abortion, women’s roles etc.). Instead, the banner should accentuate and emphasize the message of the Gospel.
Banners should be large enough to be able to be read at a reasonable distance for maximum impact. We use paint roller extending poles for our base; these can be extended to 12 feet high thus increasing the impact of the banner in crowd situations.
Crosses are also an excellent tool to proclaim a simple question like “are you ready?” I have found that these also stir up great conversations. Used in open air, it places the focus on the central message of the cross.
